Basin area photos: March - April 2008 - Waiting for Spring

Basin Wyoming, pop 1200 plus. A neat little town
on the hiway from somewhere to somewhere else.

Not a very big place. There's no mall and there are no traffic lights.

But it has all the comforts of home. Well stocked grocery store, a great hardware store.
A fine little library and a first class weekly newspaper.

Oh yes, a friendly Post Office.
And a big building with offices that handle county business.

Basin has a Cafe with good cooking.
For sit down meals and visits with
friends and neighbors.

Basin has a complete school system
with a 90+% graduation rate.

There are Churches for all faiths.

A nice little park for picnics and bar-b-q type events.

And toys for playing on.

There is a paved and well lighted walking trail.

The trail winds for less then a mile,
but you can go around twice. :)

The trail is popular with critters
as well as people.

Moving from winter quarters to summer grazing pastures.
These sheep walk through downtown Basin.

Sheep herding is still done the old fashion way,
dogs on foot and herders on horseback.

On the East side of town. The Big Horn river winds its way North from
Central Wyoming to become part of the Yellowstone river and eventualy
the Gulf of Mexico.

Although not spring yet, the river is free of ice and folks
with fishing gear are beginning to "Test the Waters". :)

On the West side of Basin is an irrigation canal bringing water,
for pastures and lawns, 30 miles North from Worland.

To the East are the snow capped Big Horn Mountains.

Although "high desert", the land will grow pretty much anything.
You just have to add water.

Surrounded by desert and "badlands". The town has done well for
its-self since the early pioneer days, over 100 years ago.

To the West, across a formidable desert is the Rocky Mountains
and somehere over there, on the other side, is the Pacific Ocean.

The desert has its own beauty and grandeur. Life flourishes, mostly unseen,
waiting for spring rains to add green color to the traditional browns and reds.
